The Lumagen LUT Boxes enable 3D calibration LUTs generated via LightSpace CMS to be uploaded into one of a selection of preset LUT location, selectable via a user infrared remote control.
When combined with LightSpace CMS the Lumagen Radiance LUT Boxes provide accurate colour management and calibration capabilities.
The size of the 3D LUT that is uploaded depends on the Lumagen LUT box being used, and LightSpace interrogates the Lumagen box and uploads the correct format.
Instructions for performing LightSpace CMS display calibration with Lumagen Radiance LUT Boxes will vary depending on the specific Radiance LUT box being used, but the following information should cover most configurations.
First, make sure the Lumagen box in use has the latest firmware installed by visiting the Lumagen website Software Update page.
Note: If there are issues communicating with the Lumagen perform a Factory Reset, as it is likely the box has been set to an non-standard configuration, such as Termination sequence character, or Echo response.
Set the Lumagen Box to Unity
Before starting calibration work ensure the Lumagen box is transparent when no calibration LUTs are loaded.
- Using the Lumagen remote control re-set to factory default
(Either use the 'Factory Reset option, or via the remote use 'Menu/0999', save the new settings and re-boot the Lumagen)
- Connect the Lumagen to the LightSpace PC via a USB or USB to Serial cable
- Select File/Upload from LightSpace, and select the active COM port
- Select 'Null Cube' (if it is not automatically selected) and 'Upload'
- If there is no LUT active with LightSpace the NULL Cube option will be ticked and greyed-out, but is operational.
(As no other LUT is available the ONLY option is the NULL Cube)
The LUT Box is now set to unity, but may not yet be correctly configured.
When the 'Null Cube' tick box is used, all Lumagen settings may be nullified if the 'Disable input reset on NULL upload' setting is not selected, not just the 1D and 3D LUTs. Should it be desired that settings other than the LUTs remain as set, upload a real Null/Bypass 3D LUT (generated via File/New), as that will only 'null' the 1D and 3D LUTs, as selected.
Note: should just the 1D or 3D LUTs require setting to Null/Unity, use the same File/New process to reset just the 1D or 3D LUTs as desired. Using the Null Cube option will always reset everything, regardless of the LUT upload selected.
Check Lumagen configuration
The Radiance LUT Box may need to be configured correctly for the display in use, and the correct configuration will vary dependant on the Radiance being used. The check is to look for incorrect black/white levels caused by incorrect Radiance settings.
To check for the correct set-up the following tests can be used.
- Using a controlled video source display a black image
- Change the In/Out HDMI options in turn and check for accurate black levels
(A probe can be used to check black levels, as outlined below)
- Generate a 'File/New' LUT, and use 'Edit/LUT Manipulation/Gamma' and set to 2.0
(If the LightSpace license you have doesn't have the 'Edit/LUT Manipulation' option, use the LUT Image to make a similar gamma change via an external graphics program)
- Using a controlled video source display the Light Illusion BrightnessCal image
- Again, change the In/Out HDMI options in turn and test by uploading the Gamma Change LUT created above
When the correct Radiance configuration is set the Gamma LUT will operate correctly, altering the image Gamma, with no change to zero black.
Patch Generation for profiling
To perform display profiling using the Radiance as a Patch Generator first set the 'Upload / Calibration Patches' option to the desired size - Small, Medium, Full, Custom - and close the Upload menu.
The Upload menu is located under 'File/Upload'.
When any 'Profiling' option is selected within LightSpace and the internal patch window is active (the LightSpace CMS internal floating patch window has been made active by clicking the small colour display box when using Quick Profiling or Manual Measure modes) the patch colour will be replicated on the Lumagen output. When connected to LightSpace, the Radiance box is set to 'Adjust' mode, so any LUT active with the Radiance will be applied to the patches generated. This enables any calibration LUT to be verified by re-profiling through the LUT when loaded within the Radiance box.
When starting any profiling form scratch ensure a 'NULL Cube' is first uploaded to the Lumagen to clear out any possible active LUT.
When the Calibration LUT has been generated from the profile within LightSpace, so that it is the active LUT within the software, the 'Upload' function can be used (with Null Cube turned off) to upload the LUT to the active Lumagen slot.
The size of the 3D LUT that is uploaded will depend on the Lumagen LUT box being used, and LightSpace interrogates the Lumagen and uploads the correct format - for example 5^3, 9^3 or 17^3 3D LUTs.
The Options menu provides additional options, with some specific to the capabilities of the Radiance Pro.
This Options menu both reads the present configuration of the Radiance, as well as allowing specific settings to be user configured.
The Options menu is predominantly aimed at the evolving UHD/HDR/WCG capable displays, but also includes global options, such as disabling input settings reset when a NULL Cube is upload, as well as enabling MODE to be used with the TPG, and selection of the CMS slot.
